Borismasters to cost £7.8m

Post  peanutbutter on Thu May 06, 2010 9:41 am

The contract with Wrightbus to develop and build the first five of the Mayor of London's new iconic buses for London has been agreed at £7.8m. The price covers the design, the building of a rototype and a rigorous testing regime, in addition to the initial batch of production vehicles. TfL has agreed a capped cost per additional vehicle built with the manufacturer. The new London ouble decker, named the Borismaster by the press, was designed in a competition open to the public, which received over 700 entries.

The partnership of Aston Martin and Fosters + Partners UK were joint winners with Capoco Design
Ltd. Wrightbus won the rights to develop the vehicle from these original design plans into a finished PCV. In a letter to The Times newspaper, London's Transport Commissioner, Peter endy, refuted claims that the new Routemaster would cost £1.6m per vehicle. He wrote, 'We fully expect to have hundreds of these bespoke hybrid vehicles on our streets in years to come. Our original outlay is a sound investment as we expect the final cost of the bus to be comparable with a standard double deck hybrid. By the end of next year the first bus, which has been designed pecifically for London, will hit the city's streets. This is an exciting project to deliver a beautifully designed, environmentally friendly vehicle built for the Capital, which will be loved by Londoners for many years to come.'

If Wrightbus build it it'll never last as long as the Routemaster did. Mad

The New Bus for London has a pioneering, futuristic design that features:

* Extensive use of glass to highlight key features and produce a light and airy feel inside the bus
* A glass 'swoop' at the rear and offside to pick out the two staircases
* An open platform at the rear, shared with the Routemaster of old, which can be closed off at quiet times and which allows the reinstatement of a hop-on hop-off service
* Three doors and two staircases for smoother, speedier boarding and access to the upper deck.

Calling it ugly would be an understatement, but I do love the glass staircase idea.

I wonder what it would be like to drive? I mean will there be a conductor, or service host taking fares and checking passes, or will it be down to the driver?!

The front reminds me of the Atlanteans Lothian used to operate. Not a fan of the front TBH, won't be long until it goes out of fashion. The idea behind the Routemaster was simplicity and standardisation...they seem to have missed that point COMPLETELY.

Am I not right in saying that TFL has a maximum age limit for buses running in London so where would the Borismasters get cascaded to? And if that is not the case they are never going to last as long as the RM's which were practically rebuilt after about 10 years service i.e. reconditioned chassis and bodies.

They will all end up scrapped after about 8 years or so. Scrap yards are now getting early SLF buses in for chopping, so they wont have too long a shelf life. Just looking at ALX400's now from 2000/2001 and they are suffering severe structural failures, so some of them will end up Barnsley bound soon

Sure First in their wisdom will just board up the extra doors badly and shuffle them off to Larkfield Laughing

I have a faint suspicion that the age restriction would be lifted on these vehicles Razz

People often say this, but in fact TfL doesn't have an age limit with regards to vehicles on tendered services. Basically, when a route comes up to tender they often specify new or refurbished vehicles as part of the contract. I know at least one London route that still uses R-reg Darts, and several with T/V-reg Tridents.

What sort of structural failures are they suffering? Chasis or body?

Both! Bodywork has rampant rot throughout, and chassis faults are being noted, especially rear axle failures

Damn it looks like the 97 Oly's will outlive them then ... they just don't build them the same anymore.

Boris is now getting rid of another London landmark. The Carbodies FX4 cab (which remained largely unchanged designwise since the 60s, and is a true London icon). They are being banned from London. It's replacement the LTI TX series is safe for now.
