West Yorkshire cut

Post  peanutbutter on Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:22 pm

I show this from else where so here it is for your information

The next WYTA meeting is taking place tomorrow and the major discussion is about the budget, with Metro forced to cut £10m (£3.5m this year, £6.5m next year). As a result, Metro are asking bus companies to help share the pain; of the cuts or Metro would be forced to axe concessionary fares, along with early morning, late evening, Sunday and rural journeys.

Not such a free bus now Very Happy

Leeds city centre’s shuttle bus services are set to stay on the road – but people will have to pay for the privilege of travelling on them.

As previously reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, the future of the ‘hop on, hop off’ services has been thrown into doubt by council funding cuts.

Fears have even been expressed that the buses – which have been free to use since their introduction in 2006 – could be axed as soon as the end of this month.

Now, though, West Yorkshire passenger transport authority Metro has announced proposals to run them on a paid-for basis for a trial period of five months from April 1.

Subject to the plan’s approval by Metro’s executive board tomorrow, passengers catching the shuttles will be charged a flat fare of 50p per journey.

Change will be given but people are being asked to help minimise delays by paying the exact amount whenever possible.

The route followed by the shuttles will remain the same, taking in key city centre destinations such as Leeds’s main rail and bus stations, its universities and Leeds General Infirmary.

There will, though, be a change in the name of the service, from Leeds FreeCityBus to LeedsCityBus.

A spokesman for Metro told the YEP the plan was a response to “widespread concerns” that had been voiced about the possible loss of the system.

He said comments had been received from many members of the public saying they would be willing to pay if it was retained.

Metro and Leeds City Council have previously shared the cost of operating the service, which has carried more than seven million people since its launch.

However, the council recently decided to pull its contribution to the scheme as it seeks to make savings of £90m in 2011-12
